Clinical Pathology Tests at Sun Diagnostics, Navi Mumbai
Clinical pathology is the part of the laboratory that examines urine, stool, sputum, semen and other body fluids. The samples are checked by chemical tests and under the microscope, and the findings help your doctor assess the kidneys, urinary tract, gut, lungs or reproductive system.
Sun Diagnostics is a pathologist-led clinical pathology lab in Navi Mumbai, with its main lab at Seawoods and centres at Taloja and Vashi. Reports are reviewed by a pathologist, under lead pathologist Dr Nikhil Ningurkar, MD Pathology.
Tests covered in clinical pathology
- Urine routine and microscopy: A urine test checks colour, sugar, protein, ketones and the cells or crystals present in urine.
- Stool examination: Looks at consistency and checks under the microscope for parasites, their eggs, pus cells and blood.
- Sputum examination: A sputum test studies phlegm coughed up from the chest for cells and organisms linked to chest infections.
- Semen analysis: A semen analysis measures sperm count, movement and shape, usually as part of a fertility assessment.
- Body fluid examination: Fluid drawn by your doctor from around the lungs, the abdomen or a joint is checked for cells, protein and sugar.
- Microscopy of smears: A microscopic disease test examines blood, urine or fluid smears for parasites such as malaria, signs of infection and abnormal cells.
Urine and stool checks are often ordered together with a blood test in Navi Mumbai, so that the doctor can read all the results side by side.
When your doctor may ask for these tests
These tests are requested for many everyday complaints. Your doctor may advise one when you have:
- Burning or pain while passing urine, frequent urination, or fever with no clear cause.
- Swelling of the feet or face, or a follow-up for diabetes, blood pressure or kidney problems.
- Loose motions, abdominal pain or suspected worms lasting more than a few days.
- A cough with phlegm that has continued for two weeks or more.
- Difficulty conceiving, where both partners are being assessed.
They are also part of routine checks during pregnancy, before surgery and in annual health check-ups. A single result rarely gives the full answer. Your treating doctor reads it along with your symptoms, examination and other reports.
Samples and how to prepare
Most of these tests need no fasting. What matters more is how the sample is collected.
- Urine: Use a clean, sterile container. Pass a little urine first, then collect the midstream portion. A first morning sample is usually preferred.
- Stool: Collect a small fresh sample in a clean, dry container, without mixing it with urine or water.
- Sputum: Collect it early in the morning after rinsing your mouth with plain water. Cough deeply so that the sample comes from the chest and is not just saliva.
- Semen: The sample is given at the lab. Doctors usually advise two to seven days without ejaculation before the test.
Tell the lab staff about any antibiotics or other medicines you are taking, if you are on your period, and the time the sample was collected. If your doctor has given specific instructions, follow those.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to fast before a urine or stool test?
Usually not. Routine urine and stool tests do not need fasting, and you can drink water as normal. If the same visit includes blood tests such as sugar or cholesterol, fasting may be needed for those. Your doctor or our team will advise when you book.
Can a semen sample be collected at home?
No. At Sun Diagnostics the semen sample is given at the lab, so that it can be examined soon after collection. Home collection is offered for blood and urine samples only. Please call before you come so that we can explain the preparation.
Will the report tell me what is wrong?
The report shows what was found in the sample, such as pus cells, protein, sugar or parasites, and whether values fall within the usual range. It is reviewed by a pathologist. Your treating doctor then interprets it with your symptoms and other tests.
