Instrument Validation and Laboratory Quality Control

Every test report is only as reliable as the machine that produced it. At Sun Diagnostics in Navi Mumbai, our instruments are calibrated, checked with quality control samples and maintained on schedule, so the numbers on your report reflect what is really in your sample. This page explains how we validate our equipment and run medical laboratory quality control, and why it matters for your health decisions.

Our commitment to quality is backed by our ISO 9001:2015 certification and our participation in an external quality assurance programme. Together, these give an independent check that our laboratory quality control processes and results meet accepted standards, test after test.

What Is Instrument Validation?

Instrument validation is the process of proving that a laboratory analyser gives accurate and consistent results before it is used for patient testing, and that it keeps doing so over time. It covers calibration, routine quality control, maintenance and record keeping. If any check falls outside the accepted range, the instrument is corrected and rechecked before patient samples are run.

Calibration of Analysers

Calibration sets an analyser against reference materials with known values, so that a reading on the machine matches the true value in the sample. Our pathology analysers are calibrated as per manufacturer guidelines and recalibrated whenever reagents change, after maintenance, or when quality control results call for it. This keeps tests such as blood sugar, lipid profile, thyroid and CBC precise and comparable from one visit to the next.

Daily Internal Laboratory Quality Control

Laboratory quality control starts every day. Quality control samples with known values are run alongside patient samples, and their results are reviewed before reports are released. If a control result drifts, testing on that instrument is paused until the cause is found and fixed. Abnormal patient results are also reviewed by a pathologist before they reach you.

External Quality Assurance

Internal checks show that an instrument agrees with itself. External quality assurance shows that our results agree with other laboratories. Through our external quality assurance programme, we test samples sent by an outside agency and our results are compared against peer laboratories. This independent comparison helps us catch any hidden bias in our methods.

Preventive Maintenance

Analysers are cleaned, serviced and inspected on a set schedule, and any service or repair is logged. Regular maintenance prevents small faults from turning into wrong results or delayed reports, and it means each instrument is checked again before it goes back into use.

Sample Tracking and Report Checks

Accurate results also depend on the right sample reaching the right machine. Each sample is tracked with barcode scanning, which links it to the correct patient from collection to report. Combined with automated analysers and pathologist review, this reduces the chance of manual errors at every step.

What This Means for You

When your doctor compares this month's report with last month's, the change should reflect your health, not a change in the machine. Validated instruments give you and your doctor results you can rely on for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. You can walk in to our centres at Seawoods, Taloja or Vashi, or book home sample collection across Navi Mumbai.
